Acupuncture for Migraines

 26th August 2015

I’ve just come across this fascinating article and wanted to share it with you.

Migraine Trust reveals that acupuncture is an effective treatment for migraines

There are a staggering 190,000 migraine attacks everyday in the UK and an estimated 25 million days are lost from work or school every year because of migraine!

The Migraine Trust, the ‘health and medical research charity for migraine’ are now excited to share the news that acupuncture is a safe, effective and affordable treatment for anyone with chronic migraines. And has none of the side effects of the preventative treatments that you can read about on their website: antidepressants, antihistamines, anticonvulsants and, for the 5% of migraineurs who are eligible, Botox injections!

So why is there no mention of acupuncture on the Migraine Trust website today?

Now this is an interesting one!NICE officially recommended acupuncture for the prevention of migraine 3 years ago – at the same time Botox was recommended for a smaller subset of patients. While the Trust have provided information about Botox they haven’t gotten around to doing the same to inform patients and healthcare providers about acupuncture, a treatment option that’s relevant to more people, costs less and has fewer side-effects.

The article speculates whether this could be a result of The Migraine Trust being primarily funded by pharmaceutical companies including Allergan, the makers of Botox.

Whatever the reason, we’re just happy that the message is starting to filter down to the general public. Acupuncture can help!

As part of this whole process of trying to get the message out we’re offering free treatments to migraine sufferers during Migraine Awareness Week 6-12 September. If this relates to you please get in touch to book your treatment.
